I have always been enthralled with Magical Realism in art and literature. That interest has led me to take various approaches to incorporate that passion in my work. Magical Realism harkens back to a description by Franz Roh, who coined the term where he said that Magical Realism is a “way to uncover the mystery hidden in ordinary objects and everyday reality.” J. S. Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy has elements of beauty and mystery. In particular there are two harmonic progressions that are especially captivating, that I find to be beautifully intriguing. One is the last six measures of the piece and another is about 33 measures in where just chords are provided to the performer. I used those two sections for the structure of the entire piece. My intent is to give the listener the sense that one might have, while in the transitional state of consciousness between wakefulness and sleep called Hypnagogia, as they are remembering Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy, and to bring a new sensitivity to those passages and bring out the mystery in them.
